Melbourne Earth tremor... 6 March 09

We were watching The Wedding Singer on television as a family, Nick and Mia were on the floor, Sarah Hubby and I were on the couch. All of a sudden Nick and I looked at each other exclaiming, "Did you feel that? There was shaking..the Earth moved!"
Now, a few hours later, there is breaking news on the telly, there WAS an earth tremor approx 4.6 on the richter scale? Epicentre was in Korumburra, a place I love down Gippsland way.
See, we really were not kidding around :)

This California girl grew up in earthquake country. I thought they were kind of fun - as long as there was no serious damage.

That must have been weird to actually *feel* something!!!

I remember feeling the house i was living-in at North Sydney sway slightly as a result of the 1985 Newcastle earthquake [it was on the side of a hill, up on stilts]... switching on ABC radio, sure enough, within 30 seconds there was a report of an earthquake in Newcastle! Eerie!!!

All the years I lived in Sydney, i'd never felt any of the reported minor earth-tremors before.

Thank goodness Australia isn't on any major fault-lines... imagine those poor buggers in San Fransisco living with that in the back of your mind all the time! Our 'earthquakes' are farts in comparison! lol

All the things happening in Victoria right now make me nearly glad to be in Canberra! Sure, it's boring here, but that's because nothing happens!

Well I felt two tremors in Sydney, first one would have been about '73 and the other one was the Newcastle earthquake in 1989, I was living in Merrylands and felt it quite distinctly. A very weird and scary feeling.

Glad to hear you survived! I lived in Japan for a few years and would often wake up on the other side of the room. Futon surfing!

Mom, Yeah, we got excited, not frightened by it.

Karisma, it was about 9pm last night that we felt it. Rain, yep, we all need a little more :)

Mal, haha, a fart it was!

Stace, I am just glad all you are feeling is that lil' baby kicking :)

Foxy, it was, at first a "what the?" moment..then when we all concurred it was what we all felt we were excited...haha, we are science nuts!

After reading everyone elses comments I would like to add, The 1989 quakes were felt by us living out at Campelltown in Sydneys south west. A block of units, the whole building swayed it was a weird sensation. Felt a bit like a wave.

Then again there was another Newcaste Quake after that one. (Around 93 I think) We were living a couple of streets from here temporarily. Our homes here are all on top of coal mines so the impact was rather scary. My whole house stared shaking, I had thought someone had run into the house with a truck at first till I realised it kept on shaking. I don't think I would have liked to be in the epicenter. We are about an hour south of Newcastle.
