Summer rain...

This morning I awoke to some nice wet looking grass and plants in the garden. This, the day I chose to wash my sheets and bed covers..well, it was something I thought about last night as I drove home from work. The smell of rain was in the air I admit, yet it had not come .

Now, as I sit here drinking my cuppacino and typing this post, it is humid. There is a feeling in the air it might just storm today...perhaps I am wrong. We could do with a good storm and some more rain.

I remember as a kid, when we would have a few days of over 40 degrees Celsius temperatures, a storm would brew at the end of the day. We would sit on the front porch and watch the change in weather happen about 20 kilometres away. Brewing over the bay..over Werribee. Sometimes the change actually never came to our house. So we would just sit and watch it dumping and lightening on the town...Melbourne too.

The last image I displayed was of the dust storm that hit Melbourne when I was a kid at school. All the kids cried and we thought, at first, it was a big ball of smoke coming from some bush fire or something. When we got home that day, mum was cleaning the window sills, and tearing her hair out over our lovely white cross-over curtains looking so red. I know that if this occurred again, I would be the same as my mum, I would panic about the dust entering the house.

And so, with that, I do greet the rain....but not the humidity thank you.

Anyone remember a storm as a kid? What was your reaction to it at the time?

Ohhhhh yeah, boy, do I ever. We had one of those "mini tornado" things hit, and I was home on my own and about 11 years old. I remember watching sheets of roofing iron flying across the paddocks toward the back windows of the house, then running through to the front window to see them flying off away from the house. It was pretty intense...

I remember my father standing on our porch during storms to watch the lightening. I do the same thing now. We've never had dust storms...and I'm thankful, I hate cleaning house anyway!! ha

Wow GB, a mini tornado would be scary shit! Worst I saw, besides the dust storm was a water spout off of Phillip Island. We were in a boat at the time.

Steph, we have got it now Steph, thanks for sending it on.

FC&F, oh..my dad and I used to do the same thing..how is your dad?

I've always loved a summer storm. I don't really clearly remember any from my childhood, but there was one about three years ago... Aidan and I had only been together for a few months, and I was still living in Hawthorn... it was quite late at night, I know it was completely dark outside, and the rain was bucketing down but it was still really warm. We ran outside, fully dressed and with bare feet, and ran around and danced in the rain like a couple of maniacs... that was so much fun. Even now, when it rains, we look at each other and smile and say, "do you remember that storm...?" :)

Same as you cazzie... I would sit on the back steps and watch it come over the mountain range over on the horizon, after the heat and dreariness of summer it was exciting to see the sky go blue black and the ozone spruce up the air so you felt you would dance crazy around the yard...which we did.

Not many electrical appliances in those days so blackouts didn't do as much damage and our old house was so solid it never creaked even...so felt really safe.... but excite.

never been in the sort of dust storm like Melbourne gets...

I'll never forget that dust storm. I had been in Greece for 10 weeks on my school holidays and it hit about an hour after I landed. Very freaky welcome back to Melbourne.

Just saw the photos of the storm on your previous post. I didn't realise it looked so intense. BTW that was my 16th birthday.

Having had a tornado that put a tree in our living room, my mom became overly cautious of storms. This meant that when the least threat came along we all headed for the basement. I hated that. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

sorry if this ignores your post a bit but I really wanted to thank you for your comment.

It hit home, for some reason, and it made me feel - really feel.

Love ya.

I remember the Santa Ana winds as a kid....trees downed, debris everywhere and out trash cans never to be found. Here in Idaho...all winter long is a storm....never ending snow, shovel, snow throw, more snow and on and on.

I love watching storms and the changing weather. Sounds like Melbourne is a great place for watching the weather.

I grew up in tornado ally so I can remember a lot of really bad storms. We had a storm cellar out back and would run for cover sometimes in the middle of the night.

I remeber a big storm as a kid while camping in Italy with my parents :)
Oh god! We were standing there all night holding the poles of the tent and hoped to not losing our roof. Ha, now I can laugh about it... but then... :)

I love thunderstorms. Though right now, we are nowhere close to that kind of weather. It is about 14*F and we got over 10 inches of snow last night. But the sun is shining, so it's all ok!

Lots and lots of storms!!! Yes.

When my kids were little we used to play in the rain, their clothes off, running about; jumping in puddles. Wonder.

I'm going to quote you - your wonderful paragraph of treatment of others in your profile.
